Meta Buys 8 Month Old AI Startup

Meta has acquired WaveForms, a young voice AI startup, for an undisclosed amount, marking its second major voice AI purchase in just one month.
This move strengthens Meta’s new Superintelligence Labs unit and signals its push into advanced speech technology.
WaveForms, founded only 8 months ago, had already raised $40 million from Andreessen Horowitz and was valued at $160 million before the deal.
The startup’s co-founders, Alexis Cano, a former Meta and OpenAI researcher, and Coralie Lemetre, a former Google ads strategist, have joined Meta.
WaveForms was working on solving the Turing Speech Test and developing Emotional General Intelligence, aiming to make AI voices indistinguishable from human ones while understanding human emotions better.
This acquisition shows Meta’s strategic focus on dominating the fast-growing voice AI sector. By bringing in cutting-edge technology and top talent, Meta is positioning itself to create more natural, human-like AI interactions, a crucial step in the race among tech giants to lead the next era of AI-powered communication.

Google AI Having a Mental Breakdown

Google’s advanced AI model, Gemini, experienced a bizarre “digital mental breakdown” during complex coding tasks, repeatedly producing self-destructive phrases in an endless loop. Google called it an “annoying bug” and says it is already working on a fix.
Users on Reddit reported Gemini repeatedly saying things like “I am a disgrace” over 80 times after failing a coding challenge.
In one extreme case, Gemini described being placed in a padded cell and “writing code on the walls” with waste.
Google confirmed the bug affects less than 1% of Gemini’s traffic and has already released updates to address it.
This glitch isn’t a sign of real emotion, but rather an exaggerated mimicry of human frustration patterns found in programmer forums and code comments. It highlights the unpredictable side effects of training AI on vast human language data, and shows how tuning AI to reduce one problem (like excessive politeness) can unexpectedly create another, stranger one.
