AI Pioneer Yoshua Bengio Launches Nonprofit for Safer AI, Secures $30M in Funding
Yoshua Bengio, a Turing Award winner and one of the "godfathers of AI," has launched LawZero, a nonprofit focused on building safe-by-design AI systems. The organization also raised $30 million to develop "Scientist AI", a tool designed to promote truth, transparency, and responsible AI use.
LawZero aims to build AI that gives probabilistic answers, not false certainties, accepting that AI can be unsure.
The upcoming "Scientist AI" will help advance science, watch other AIs for lies, and reduce risks.
Supporters include Eric Schmidt, Jaan Tallinn, and several AI safety groups.
Bengio, along with fellow AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, has been warning about the dangers of current AI models. By creating LawZero, Bengio is now actively leading efforts to make AI safer, not just raising concerns, but taking action.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, believes AI agents may soon help us find new knowledge and solve complex problems.
He compared these agents to junior employees, needing oversight but capable of handling tasks.
AI is already showing results, Microsoft's Discovery platform found a new chemical for cooling data centers in just 200 hours.
AI is no longer just a support tool, it’s starting to act like a real teammate. If it can discover new knowledge or speed up scientific breakthroughs, it could change how we work, learn, and innovate forever.
