Anthropic locked in $9.1B, 20-year compute at Riot Platforms

AI agents are taking action across your enterprise

— calling APIs, touching SaaS apps, moving data — often on shared credentials no one can trace. The access controls built for humans weren't built for this.

Join us on August 20 at 10 AM PT for a technical look at governing agent identity at the moment of action.
You'll learn how to:

- Inventory every agent already running in your environment and shut down shadow AI

- Bind every agent to a specific human owner, not a shared credential

- Replace standing permissions with scoped, short-lived access

WHAT’S HAPPENING AI TODAY

Anthropic signed a 20-year compute lease with Riot Platforms for 191 megawatts at its Rockdale, Texas data center — valued at $9.1 billion. This is the largest single AI compute lease ever signed and the most significant infrastructure commitment in Anthropic's history. It diversifies Anthropic's compute base away from SpaceX's Colossus facilities, where it currently pays approximately $1.25 billion per month.

The details:

  • 191 megawatts over 20 years at Rockdale, Texas. Riot Platforms is best known as a Bitcoin mining operator — its Rockdale facility is one of the largest power-secured data center sites in North America, with direct access to ERCOT's grid. Anthropic is not the first AI company to realise that the infrastructure built for Bitcoin mining has exactly the power density and cooling capacity needed for AI inference at scale.

  • The deal reduces Anthropic's single-vendor compute dependency — the same risk that made the Fable 5 ban so operationally painful. A 20-year lease at a Texas facility gives Anthropic infrastructure that is geographically separate from its existing compute, under a contract that cannot be terminated unilaterally by a government directive.

  • Anthropic is simultaneously in talks with Samsung, Microsoft's Maia 200, and AMD for custom inference chips. The $9.1B Riot lease secures the power and facility. The chip negotiations determine what runs inside it. Both are necessary; neither is sufficient alone.

  • The same week: an unreleased Claude model improved the Riemann-Zeta bound — a 90-year-old open problem in number theory — from 41.6% to a new record. Anthropic did not name the model or the specific improvement. The disclosure follows the 30-mathematician criticism of OpenAI's Astra proofs from last week. Anthropic's approach: disclose the result, withhold the model, let mathematicians verify independently.

Why it matters: The $9.1B compute lease is not just an infrastructure announcement. It is an IPO signal. Anthropic's October roadshow will be built around a story of durable, diversified compute — and a 20-year lease at a power-secured Texas facility is the most concrete evidence yet that the company is building for permanence, not just the next funding round. For enterprise teams evaluating Anthropic as a long-term vendor: the infrastructure commitment makes the vendor risk argument meaningfully weaker than it was last month.

[Webinar] Can you prove AI is working?

AI is in your engineering workflow. While the token spend shows it, the throughput doesn't. The human is very much still in the loop, and that's a context problem.

AI NEWS HIGHLIGHT

OpenAI Daybreak Red: GPT-5.6-Cyber is the first model rated "High" under the White House cyber framework — the classified vetting framework produced its first public outcome. This rating shapes every subsequent frontier model assessment.
Unreleased Claude improved the Riemann-Zeta bound beyond 41.6% — a 90-year-old open problem — understated disclosure, no model named. The contrast with OpenAI's Astra coverage is deliberate and visible.
Cross-session encrypted reasoning blocks let weaker models decrypt Anthropic, OpenAI, Google chain-of-thought — a new paper showing that model reasoning can be extracted across sessions using encrypted blocks. The implications for model security are significant.
Sun Life built its own agentic AI platform — $1.5T AUM insurer, not a tech company — when insurers build proprietary AI rather than buying vendor access, the enterprise AI market has reached a different maturity level.
AvePoint: record net new ARR on AI governance — the compliance layer is its own growth market — separate from models, growing faster than most expected. Governance tooling is now a revenue line, not a cost centre.
CapCut's Seedance 2.5 is flooding social feeds — ByteDance's AI video is winning the consumer market — not with a press release, with distribution. TikTok's parent is winning AI video the same way it won short-form video: by putting it where the audience already is.
Claude Sonnet 5 introductory pricing: 20 days left at $2/$10 — standard $3/$15 from September 1. The Anthropic compute lease makes the vendor risk argument weaker. The pricing change makes the routing decision more urgent.

Make your final AI model routing decisions — 20 days before September 1

Prompt: You are an AI infrastructure strategist. Today is August 12. Claude Sonnet 5 introductory pricing ends in 20 days. Anthropic just signed a $9.1B, 20-year compute lease — the vendor risk argument for avoiding Anthropic is materially weaker today than it was last week. OpenAI's Daybreak Red launched with GPT-5.6-Cyber rated "High" under the White House cyber framework — the first model to receive that rating. Meta's Muse Glimmer runs on a single GPU under Apache 2.0. AMD's Taalas acquisition promises 17,000 tokens per second on hard-coded chips in H1 2027. The model and infrastructure landscape of August 12 is different from July.

Here is our current setup: [describe your workloads, models, monthly token volume, monthly spend, and the three most business-critical AI workflows].

Help me make four final decisions before August 31:

1. The vendor risk reassessment — Anthropic's $9.1B Riot Platforms lease changes the vendor risk calculation. The Fable 5 ban lasted 19 days; Anthropic now has compute that cannot be terminated by a government directive on SpaceX. How does this change our Anthropic risk rating, and does it change our fallback architecture? Be specific about what is different and what is not.

2. The September 1 routing decision — Sonnet 5 moves from $2/$10 to $3/$15. With Muse Glimmer at Apache 2.0 (free to self-host), Meta Muse Code Terminal at $1.25/$4.25, and Gemini 3.6 Flash at $1.50/$9: for each of our current Sonnet 5 workloads, which alternative — if any — is the right routing change? Show me the monthly cost impact of each decision. Include the new tokenizer's 1.0–1.35x overhead in the Sonnet 5 numbers.

3. The security model update — OpenAI's GPT-5.6-Cyber is now rated "High" under the government cyber framework. If any of our workloads touch security — vulnerability scanning, code review, threat intelligence, incident response — what does the Daybreak Red programme offer that our current setup does not? And is our current setup auditable against the EU AI Act's requirements for high-risk AI systems?

4. The August 31 calendar — three actions, three dates, one owner for each. Every routing decision that is not made by August 31 is made by the September 1 pricing change. No open items.

Final constraint: assume Claude Sonnet 5 standard pricing at $3/$15 is permanent. Design your routing as if introductory pricing never existed. That is the model stack you are actually committing to.
