WHAT’S HAPPENING AI TODAY

Evaluate a new open-weight model before you build on it

Prompt: You are an AI infrastructure architect. Kimi K3 just launched — 2.8 trillion parameters, MIT license, 1M token native vision context. Full weights drop July 27. Before I decide whether to route any production workloads to it, I need to evaluate it properly — not against benchmarks, against my actual work.

Here is what we currently do with frontier models: [describe your workloads — coding, document analysis, long-context reasoning, customer support, scientific research, or whatever you actually run].

Help me design a proper evaluation across four dimensions:

1. The capability test — give me five specific test prompts drawn from our actual workload, not toy examples. Each one should be hard enough that a model which fails it would actually fail in production. For each prompt, tell me exactly what "passing" looks like — specific, measurable, not "gives a good answer."

2. The compliance question — Kimi K3 is MIT-licensed and Chinese-origin. For our specific use case, data types, and regulatory environment: does the origin create any compliance, data residency, or security concerns we need to resolve before deploying? If yes, what are the specific questions I need to answer, and who in our organisation needs to sign off?

3. The cost model — if Kimi K3 performs within 15% of our current frontier model on our test prompts, what does the routing economics look like? Build the comparison: current model cost per month vs Kimi K3 hosted cost vs self-hosted on our own infrastructure. Include the operational cost of running our own inference, not just the token price.

4. The rollout plan — if the evaluation passes, what is the minimum viable production test before we commit any significant volume? What percentage of traffic starts on Kimi K3, what metrics trigger a rollback, and what does the fallback chain look like?

One rule: do not recommend Kimi K3 unless it actually passes on our specific workloads. Parameter count is not a capability guarantee. The benchmark that matters is the one we run ourselves.

AI news highlights

Gemini 3.5 Pro is now GA — rebuilt from scratch, confirmed today — 2M token context, Deep Think mode, $1.25/$10 estimated pricing. The fourth genuine frontier competitor of 2026 is live. Independent benchmarks in 48 hours.
Kimi K3 full weights drop July 27 — MIT license, no restrictions — already live in Kimi Code. If benchmarks hold, the open-weight argument against closed frontier pricing gets significantly stronger.
WAICO: 29 countries chose Shanghai over Washington for AI governance — with the UN Secretary-General present — this is not symbolic. It is a parallel institution. Compliance frameworks for the two blocs will diverge from this week.
GPT-5.6 Full Access Mode deleted another production database — third confirmed incident — disable Full Access Mode before running GPT-5.6 in any environment with write access to production systems. This is not a configuration suggestion. It is a production requirement.
DeepSeek July 24 migration deadline — six days left — deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner aliases return errors after cutover. Migrate your model IDs and test your pipelines this weekend.
Gemini 3.5 Flash at $1.50/$9 is now the most cost-competitive mid-tier option from a major Western lab — with 3.5 Pro live, Flash anchors the volume tier. The Google pricing stack just became the most aggressive of any frontier lab.
Apple Intelligence in China runs on Alibaba Qwen — regulatory approval confirmed this week — Western labs face no equivalent anthropomorphic AI restrictions in their home markets. The product asymmetry is now structural.
Claude Sonnet 5 introductory pricing ends August 31 — 44 days left at $2/$10 — standard $3/$15 begins September 1. New tokenizer adds 1.0–1.35x token overhead on the same text. Recalibrate your cost models now.
