OpenAI saw three senior executives walk out the door in a single day — former CPO Kevin Weil, Sora lead Bill Peebles, and enterprise apps chief Srinivas Narayanan — capping what has been an unusually turbulent month of leadership changes as the company sharpens its focus and cuts what it calls distractions.
The details:
Weil had been steering OpenAI for Science — a program now being absorbed into other teams, with the Prism app for researchers folded into Codex rather than continuing as a standalone product.
Peebles oversaw Sora until the video generation app was quietly shut down last month due to runaway compute costs — a project he described as one of the defining experiences of his career.
Narayanan spent three years running enterprise applications at OpenAI after 13 years at Facebook, and announced on X that he is returning to India to be closer to his ageing parents.
Sam Altman recently wrote that OpenAI has outgrown its startup days and now needs to run with the consistency and predictability of a major platform — a shift that appears to be showing up in how the organisation is being restructured.
Why it matters: Three senior exits in one day is not routine. Whether these departures are a direct consequence of the strategic narrowing or personal decisions that happened to coincide, the pattern is clear — OpenAI is shedding the experimental edges and tightening around a smaller set of bets. For anyone building on top of OpenAI's products, that shift in internal focus is worth watching closely.
