China’s DeepSeek App Takes Over Apple Store

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has launched a chatbot app that competes with powerful models like OpenAI's ChatGPT. Despite limited resources, its iOS app has become the most downloaded free app on Apple's App Store.

  • DeepSeek surpasses ChatGPT: The DeepSeek app has overtaken ChatGPT to become the top free app in Apple's App Store, powered by its DeepSeek-V3 model.

  • Hardware limitations overcome: Due to U.S. export restrictions, DeepSeek trained its models on less advanced H800 chips, spending under $6 million.

  • Economic and geopolitical impact: The app's success has worried U.S. companies, challenged the effectiveness of sanctions, and boosted shares of Chinese tech firms like Iflytek.

DeepSeek's rise highlights China's growing AI capabilities despite hardware restrictions. It raises questions about the effectiveness of U.S. sanctions and could force global companies to rethink their strategies.

  • McCartney supports responsible use of AI but warns that loose copyright practices pose an economic threat to artists.

AI's growing use in creative industries has sparked debates on copyright and artist rights. McCartney’s stance highlights the need for legal frameworks that ensure fair compensation for artists while regulating AI’s impact on creativity and ownership.
