Meta has launched a program called the Model Capability Initiative that records screenshots, keystrokes, and mouse activity on U.S. employees' work laptops — with no opt-out option — to collect real behavioral data for AI training purposes. The move has triggered significant internal pushback.
The details:
The program focuses heavily on developer workflows, logging activity across tools like VSCode, Meta's internal AI assistant Metamate, Google Chat, and Gmail.
An internal memo published by Business Insider showed CTO Andrew Bosworth acknowledging employee concerns — while making clear there is no option to opt out.
Timing is notable: around 8,000 Meta staff are due to leave on May 20, and the program begins logging their workflows a full month before their exit date.
The initiative was framed internally as a way for every Meta employee to contribute to making the company's models better simply by doing their normal daily work.
Why it matters: Robotics labs have spent years filming humans doing physical tasks to teach machines how to move. Meta just applied the same logic to software work — using its own employees as the training set. The difference is that those employees didn't sign up for it, and the backdrop of mass layoffs makes the surveillance feel considerably less voluntary than the framing suggests.
