$300M Clould’t Lure OpenAI Stars

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Calls Out Meta’s Recruiting Tactics in Internal Message
In a heated message shared on Slack, Sam Altman criticized Meta for aggressively trying to poach OpenAI researchers, calling their approach “distasteful.” He stressed that building AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) at OpenAI is more meaningful than chasing high salaries at rival companies.
Altman claimed Meta offered up to $300 million over 4 years but still failed to hire their top choices.
He said OpenAI is reviewing researcher pay, noting its stock has “much more upside” than Meta’s.
Altman warned that Meta’s hiring style may lead to “deep cultural problems,” while OpenAI remains mission-focused.
Altman’s message shows a growing battle for top AI talent. With Meta launching its new Superintelligence Labs and pulling hires from top AI labs, tensions are rising. Altman is trying to keep OpenAI’s team united by focusing on purpose over paychecks, but whether that’s enough remains to be seen.

Cloudflare Now Blocks AI Crawlers by Default and Launches Paywall for Bots
Cloudflare has started automatically blocking AI crawlers from accessing new websites it protects, unless they get permission. At the same time, it launched a new "Pay per Crawl" marketplace where publishers can charge AI bots micropayments to access their content.
AI companies must now get clear permission before crawling any of the 20% of the web that Cloudflare protects.
Publishers can set their own prices for different bot uses, like training data or search.
Big media names like TIME, The Atlantic, and Condé Nast support the move due to traffic losses from AI tools answering without linking back.
Cloudflare’s shift could change how AI companies access the internet. It may lead to fairer deals between publishers and tech firms, but it might also create a split internet, one with premium content behind paywalls, and another filled with free content that AI tools rely on by default.
