Microsoft Drops Its Own AI Models

Microsoft unveils its first in-house AI models, marking a new step in its AI strategy.

Microsoft introduced two new models: MAI-Voice-1, built for fast speech generation, and MAI-1-preview, designed to showcase the future of Copilot. These models aim to improve speed, usefulness, and personalization in AI tools.

  • MAI-Voice-1 can generate a one-minute voice clip in under a second using only one GPU.

  • The model already powers Copilot Daily, where AI narrates daily news.

  • MAI-1-preview, trained on 15,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, is being tested for answering everyday questions and text-based tasks.

This move shows Microsoft’s effort to reduce reliance on OpenAI and build its own AI foundation, ensuring faster innovation and more control over its AI products.

Trump administration’s deal limits Intel’s freedom to spin off its chip-making unit.

The U.S. government now owns a 10% stake in Intel, with terms designed to stop Intel from selling or separating its foundry unit, even though it has been losing money. The deal also includes billions in funding tied to the CHIPS Act.

  • Intel received $5.7 billion in cash this week from earlier CHIPS Act grants.

  • A five-year warrant could give the U.S. government another 5% of Intel if the foundry unit is spun out.

  • Intel’s foundry business posted a $3.1 billion loss last quarter.

The agreement shows Washington’s strong push to keep advanced chip production in the U.S. while reducing reliance on overseas manufacturers like TSMC in Taiwan. It also highlights the tension between national security goals and Intel’s struggle with its money-losing foundry unit.
