OpenAI is building its first smart speaker with Jony Ive, priced at $200 to $300, aiming to launch in early 2027.
OpenAI is working with Jony Ive on its first hardware product, a smart speaker with a built in camera and facial recognition.
The project started after OpenAI bought Ive’s startup Io Products for $6.5 billion in May.
The speaker’s camera may watch its surroundings and gently guide users toward actions.
OpenAI is also planning AI smart glasses, expected no earlier than 2028. A smart lamp has been built as a prototype.

New AI Chip is 100x Faster

Taalas launches a new AI chip called HC1 that runs one model only and delivers responses up to 100x faster than standard hardware.
The chip locks in Meta’s Llama 3.1 8B model directly into the hardware, allowing it to answer in under 100 milliseconds while using far less power and cost than typical systems.
The HC1 chip permanently embeds Llama 3.1 8B, instead of running it as software on general chips.
It delivers responses nearly instantly, around 100x faster than common hardware and about 10x faster than today’s fastest output systems.
Taalas raised $169M in new funding, pushing total funding past $200M, and plans to release stronger models in the coming months.
The current model on the chip is not the most advanced, but the real story is the technology behind it. If this design works with more powerful models, it could reshape areas like physical AI and smart agents where every millisecond counts.
