Standard Chartered just announced it's cutting 7,000 jobs by 2030 — about 15% of its corporate workforce — to make room for AI and automation.

The CEO's framing was blunt: "It's replacing, in some cases, lower-value human capital with financial capital."

Let that sink in. People, described as lower-value capital.

The back offices in Chennai, Bengaluru, Kuala Lumpur, and Warsaw will feel it most. These aren't executive suites — they're the people doing the daily operational work that keeps a global bank running.

Standard Chartered isn't alone. Tech companies cut nearly 80,000 positions in just the first quarter of 2026, with almost half attributed to AI. An MIT study estimates AI could displace 11.7% of all U.S. workers across every industry.

But here's the nuance worth holding: some researchers and even OpenAI's Sam Altman have pointed out that "AI did it" is increasingly being used to dress up layoffs that were really about poor business decisions. AI as scapegoat, not just AI as disruptor.

So what's actually true? Probably both — at the same time.
